Trying hard to sleep in a far too hot hotel-room

The last weeks or something have been rather busy. And I'm not sure when I'll be able to get on top of things. It's kind of good though to have something to do at work. Sometimes I wish though that it didn't come in "all you can eat buffet" portions.

Sleep is probably what I need the most at the moment. Since I'm going offshore tomorrow morning for the weekend.

I am starting to believe in a sane world again after the last election "over there". (I just hate that a terrible cher-song got stuck on my mind when I wrote the above sentence. Guess which.)

It is soon my birthday and if I get some time off before the date, I have a rather big project planned for the year I'm 28.

I'm offshore on an oilrig again. Enjoying a nice cold beer and some nice chocolate. Meaning I've started working after a good summervacation. Ok, ok, the beer is munkholm and I'm not even remotely drunk. (Just to stop you from wondering what on earth is going on here.)

To summarize my summer after my last post this is the highlights from the last part of the summer:
- They've finally started building my appartement. Now I have loads of decisions to make about how I want it to be before the midle of october.
- The weather have been great and I've gotten some relaxing days in the shade.
- I had a great trip to Suldal with Kjetil and Geir I.
- Several of my friends have tried to hook me up with single girls they know. (I'm not so shure this is a good or a bad thing yet, but hey, at least they don't think I'm a lost case.)
- I had a fantastic annual trip with my friends to Rosendal.

What joy. I've now had two weeks off from work and it has been fantastic. Relaxing and just enjoying the weather.

The first week I was for the most part alone in our cabin relaxing.

The next week I had a trip around to meet friends and do some more social summer activities.

Ok my blogging-rate has slowed down a bit, but I thought I might as well update this page on what's going on in my life.

I bought a car, I found a nice girl and are soon moving into my new apartment. I am rapidly being promoted at work, and everything I touch turns to gold. I bet you understood that I made all that up. I am still living at home in the basement. They haven't even started building my apartment yet. I don't think telling girls that you live in your parents basement is a great pickup-line. I haven't bought my own car, thus I haven't found that nice girl yet either. (My theory is that girls are subconsciously attracted to guys with cars, don't ask me why. But all I've seen so far in my life supports the theory.)

On the workside however things are still going well. I'm constantly getting more responsibilities and most projects I do, turn out to be successful.

Conclusion:

and that with a fullbloded SLR. I've wanted one of these for a long time, but haven't been able to convince myself that I needed one since the camera I had mostly did the job. But with the destruction of one camera came the opportunity to finally go treat myself with one. My gadget-hungry eyes landed on a Nikon D70s with the kit lens and a SB-600 flash.

The fun thing having bought a SLR is that I suddently have to learn how to use a shitload of new stuff to be able utilize the full potential of the camera.

Today I dropped my trusty lumix-camera on the edge of my desk and suddently it starts acting all win-98 on me. Telling me "please turn your kamera off and on again", I feel like a support guy from the it crowd has gotten stuck in there somewhere.

On the bright side, I was on the verge of starting to gather arguments to convince myself to buy a DSLR.

The lensefluid they pulled back because it made people blind.

Ok a couple of weeks ago this stuff was in the news because they had realized it could make peoples eyes get seriously infected and possibly blind. I didn't think much about it before I checked the bottle they gave me the last time I was in. BINGO!

So I went to my optician asap and demanded a check on my eyes and a new bottle. She couldn't find anything so I guess it was only a grain that got stuck in my eye or something. When she tried to charge me afterwards I wasn't really in the mood for paying for a check after they had given me something that could potentially make me blind. Had she insisted, they would have lost a client.

I witnessed it! And what a moment it was. By far it was the most exciting moment, numbers-wise I've participated (knowingly) in, in my whole life. I could feel the tension rising as the critical second approached. My eyes getting dry from staring at the clock and my head getting dizzy. And then suddently it was all over. But for a whole second my date and time together showed 010203040506. [hhmmssddmmyy]

Ok, maybe I exaggerated it a bit, but I did experience it.

I just came back from a week out on Eldfisk in the north sea. The spring is slowly coming out there too, though things doesn't turn green and stuff out there as here onshore. And luckily you don't see any more skin than usual when walking around on the platforms.

So back to the thing I saw. I looked through the usual newspages to see what had happened the last week, and there on one of the newsposts on dagbladet.no I see a picture from excactly the spot where I was caught climbing a couple of months ago.

The stunt was performed five meters above where the photographer was standing and about 4 meters to the ~~right~~ left.

This easter I woke up one morning after having a terrible dream. I had the feeling I somehow had forgotten one excam and that was the reason why I hadn't gotten the diploma from the university yet. After waking up I couldn't get rid of the feeling because I couldn't remember having seen the diploma.

After having confronted my parents with this they had a vague memory of an envelope coming home with something like that last fall. Short story: I don't have that awful gutfeeling anymore.

Ohh, and I did another remake of the layout here.

Busy week just in time to interrupt Easter holidays

So I thought I would have plenty of time to get a nice long easterholiday this year. And then suddently my plans changed. Today I was a short trip to Trondheim to present the company I work at for a bunch of students and some professors. (We are employing smart people, and the university seemed to be a good place to start.) I arrived home just in time to be able to say that I did it all in one day.

Tomorrow, or in 5 hrs, a taxi is picking me up and driving me to the heliport. I'll actually spend the first part of the Easter out in the north sea working. Luckily my company didn't want to have me out during the days marked red in the calendar so I will only stay a week. And thus manage to get half a week up in the mountains skiing.

It's a work in progress in it's not finished yet, but you get the idea. I'm planning to have rounded corners and other nifty things on it. I know it isn't excactly friendly with ie yet, but perhaps soon it will be.

Anyone who knows where I live know that there is a steep road that leads up to our house. On the top of that road there is a T-crossing, where you take right to come to us. Today I met an elderly woman in that "crossing". She had to drive back approximately 1 _ONE_ meter to let me by, but would she? Not a chance. I had to back all the way down to let here by because she apparently could not drive that car in reverse for even one meter. I say, let them eat cake, but keep them away from the roads. To be driving a car, you should be capable of driving a car both ways.

And that is where I stand regarding old women behind the wheel. Let them eat cake.

To night I came home at one o'clock. Dumped my bags suitcases and tripods on the floor and went to bed. This morning I wanted to brush my teeth and opened one of my bags. How come someone put their stuff into my bag!? After slowly coming to consciousness I realized that it actually wasn't my bag... I had committed my first airport-theft. Weee! Yet another big step towards my bad-boy image.

Since I'm so comfortable with my new image I won't tell you that I went to the airport and gave back the stolen bag. (I don't need someone else's dirty underwear anyway.) My almost identical bag was luckily lying there waiting for me.

No climbing so far

The last week I've been out on an oilrig named Njord located on Haltenbanken outside the coast of Norway. It's a floater. Wich I did not realize the first day out here. You could say I got pretty relieved when I realized that it actually was the ground beneath my feet that was moving, not me starting on a serious case of sickness. Feeling dizzy and all that.

This is the first real trip I've had alone. (that last stunt-trip only counts in the "platforms-I've-set-my-feet-on"-list.) So far I've managed to overcome any obstacles I've met and I'm now moving on in a really professionally-ish way out here. The sun is shining, the snow is melting, I've got an itchy balaclava, my shoes are taking in water, the food is excellent and a man sleeps on my room when I'm out working during the day. In other words: I can't complain.

Estimated time for leaving this pile of metal is the coming tuesday.

I don't think anyone need a tutorial for this, but this is how I do it.

First off sit down in front of you computer and open up you favorite webbrowser. Then go through some of your usual sites and no speedbrowsing with rss-feeds allowed.

Then download some good TV-series, sit back and enjoy. The beauty with TV-series is that you always have time for just one more episode. Before you know it you've seen a season and spent a whole day doing nothing.

Easy, isn't it?

This is the helmet I wear and it rocks.

If there is such a thing near you. A week has gone since my climbingstunt out on the oilrig. The one that got me sent back to land as fast as possible.

Since then I've bought an iPod video 60GB (which is really cool), a new mainboard for my computer and generally procrastinated as much as humanly possible. My next trip offshore is starting on friday and I'm crossing my fingers and hoping I won't do anything as stupid as the last time. Until then I'm filling up my iPod with Simpsons episodes and pretending as much as possible to be normal.

Yet again something exciting happens in my adventurous life. Today I got deported from an oilrig because I did a climbingstunt in front off the platform chief. It is safe to say that the audience did not like the performance. It was in fact the most serious breach on safetyrules he had seen since 1992. (the first version of the rig sank in 1992...)

So how does a chief on an oilrig act to say that he didn't like your performance?
- First off you are not allowed to move outside the living quarters anymore. (As if you've suddently become a threat to safety on board.)
- Then you have to pack all your equipment and get ready to leave on the first flight back to land. (Resulting in an urgent job being postponed until things settle.)
- Then you have to write an extensive report on what happened and participate in a safety-debriefing with everyone on board with the word "safety" in their job-title. (the big bosses on the platform also attend here.)
- At the same time "petroleumstilsynet" starts an investigation commition to investigate what happened and how it can be avoided in the future. (I'm preparing for the chat I'm going to have with them soon.)

Then he tells you have a pleasant day and wish you a nice flight back on shore.

Finally a crib with a lush feeling to an affordable price.

So my first trip offshore got a litle longer than I planned. And what did I learn during this first trip?

- without my cellphone I don't know what time it is.
- during three weeks my nails grow beyond the comfort zone.
- bring something to read that will last one week longer than you think you'll need.

Enough about that, I'm currently looking for an appartment. The basement at home is ok temporary, but as an.. uhm .. 27ish years old guy, it is not a place to settle down. Hence, you have the reason for the posted picture above.

The last six months I spent sailing from Norway through Europe, Africa, Brasil and the Caribean and now I'm working. So how is life as a working man then?

This is how my first weeks have been:

first week: safetycourse to be able to go offshore
second week: working in office. Mostly just getting my office sorted out and my computers up and running how I want them to run.
Third week: went offshore to an oilrig-complex in the north sea named ekofisk. The largest out here, and if I'm not wrong one of the oldest. A normal day goes like this:
0600: wakeup-alarm rings
0630: breakfast (three pancakes with blueberryjam, bacon and, a glass of milk and one of orangejuice.)
0700: walks half a km to get to the place I'm working
0745: finnished with all forms I need to fill out and at the place I'm actually doing my work
1200: lunch (30 min)
1900: finishing work out on the platform and starting to get all the neccessary papers in order to get back for dinner.
1915ish: Dinner (30 min)
->2130ish: postprossesing of all the data I've collected during the day and backup (this part can take everything from an hr to several.)
2330: bedtime (if I'm finished with postprosessing)

fourth week: look third week
fifth week: I thought I was only allowed to be out 14 days... looks like 21 is the actual limit. I moved my flight from monday to friday. Five more days at sea.

So how is my scedule the coming weeks then?
sixth week: office
seventh week: offshore again, this time to Sleipner. They say the standard is better there. First trip where I'm fully responsible for the job. Second trip in total.
eight week: office until friday when it seems like I'm going back out offshore to finish a job.

It shure is a different life, being a working man.

Then I'm finally back. The relaxed life aboard a sailingboat is finished for now, the christmas was spent in Norway and is closing an end too, and finally I started working today.

Well, work is not entirely true as I am on an introductory safety course the first week that is mandatory for anyone planning to work offshore on oilriggs and boats.

Today we had a day in the sea, swimming around in survival-suits. The temperature was around 0C, the sun was shining and life was good.

Updates on the page will come more regulary now as I'm back.

I just started using the kind of lenses I can wear for a month before I take them out. Not like the lense I had just peeled out when taking this shot. They were one year old and really hard to get out.

This is going to be cold.

I had my first bath in the sea yesterday, At Vaulen. It wasn't as cold as I feared it would be, but it wasn't as warm as I hoped it would be either. This time no one wanted to join me so I had to do it alone. just me and my camera.

It is almost the first of june and it doesn't feel like summer at all. The ~~beuty~~ curse of living in Norway I guess.

I now have 16 days before I have to deliver my thesis. The end of five years at the university is closing waay too fast.

I printed everything I've written so far today and read through it all. As you might know I was stupid enough to decide to write it in english.

well... Today I seriously considered rewriting everything I've written so far to nynorsk. (new-norwegian) I can't believe how bad the language was in the first chapters I'd written. Luckily It got slightly better througout the paper.

Singing "internationalen"

It has become a tradition to celebrate labours day by going into the woods in Trondheim and barbequing lambchops. No reason to skip the tradition this year, so I made the trip up from Stavanger and got to join in on the fun.

My parole this year was "Ja til Laif". An accidental parole that got made because the parole minister misspelled the parole that should have read "Vi vil ha loff!". Fortunately I fond a catchy tune that fit my parole like a glove.

I'm back in Stavanger and have now started the race to finish my thesis before 10th of june.

I have been thinking of redesigning this blog a while now. Uhm ok, the blog isn't older than a couple of months, but still...

The old design of my blog had some bold colours that I wanted to change. Black is propably a better background for my pictures anyway.

During my redesign I experienced a really bad crash that sent me to a error-page on blogger. That freaked me out. Luckily it suddently worked again and now the new design is almost up. I might just do some tinkering with it later on though...

We left Stavanger monday and stayed at our place in Suldal untill Saturday. Compared to last year there was a lot more snow this year. So we could take some skiing-trips around the area without having to padle over the lake on an ice-flake. Like we almost had to do last easter.

This year I finally read "The Da Vinci code". I know I have been reluctant to reading this book. Mostly because of the hype, but as the hype has settled some and I forgot to bring any other books it was an easy alternative. And it is a crimebook...

The book was worth the read, but I guess you have to keep a reflected mind when you're reading it, and not swallow all the ideas as facts. It is not like the book came with any bibliography or anything. It was an entertaining book that throws enough answers in your face to make you so curious you want to find out more. And that is an accomplishment in it self for a crimebook.

I also read "SirkusdirektÃ¸rens datter" a book written by Jostein Gaarder. It was bisarre. A clever idea, but a rather weird ending. Most definitly a Jostein Gaarder-book.

Hopefully I will receive my new camera tomorrow...

First off: The above picture is not taken with my new camera.

Last wednesday I ordered a new digital camera from an online shop. After going through my old photos, cropping and tweeking the pictures I realized that there isn't much left when you crop a 1.3 Mpix photo. After reading reviews, going to every single shop around that I could think of to see what they have to recomend and asking stupid questions. I finally decided to go for a Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ1. It met my most important requirements (good optics, not too big, able to use normal batteries and not too expensive.)

I pressed the "order" button and crossed my fingers that it would arrive before easter. I followed the package-tracking almost hourly waiting for any news to where my new camera were. It got delivered to the postoffice late thursday and I expected it to have arrive sometime friday to Stavanger. Midday friday there were news...

"arrived at the post-distribution center in Trondheim" was the message that popped up when I checked. What!? That isn't the shortest way..! Why the... Hmm... Wait a minute. Which adress did it say I had ordered it to in the mail? Checking.. Cheking.. DANG! It was registered to my old adress. No one to get angy at other than myself... Hrmf...

Hopefully my new camera will arrive early this week so that I can bring it with me and test it during easter holliday.

Bying your clothes on the Internet is propably something that makes you a geek in most people's minds. So I admit it; I am a geek. I have been known to buy several t-shirts on the internet, and Threadless is my latest favourite. Until monday they've got a discount on all t-shirts. With a price at 10$ a t-shirt you are able to buy 3 t-shirts under the tax-limit in Norway.

I am mainly focusing on schoolwork nowadays, so I haven't been posting too much lately. Here comes my last week as a list:

- It's snowing outside so I don't want to get out...
- It's sunny outside but I have to work so I don't get out...
- I want to play anarchy online and get really annoyed by all the sunlight that shines on my screen...
- I am considering taking a jog, but realise I don't have any shoes that would be good at that...
- I realize that sitting in the dark in front of a computer is considered nerdy by people who doesn't do such things...
- Is my skin turning green?
- I really need to get out tomorrow and get some sunlight...
- Maybe I should buy some sneakers tomorrow...
- Ahh. Sky captain and the world of tomorrow, that is a good film...

First trip to an oilrig

I am back from Scotland now after working on this rig. We worked from early morning to late at night each day. And when we didn't work we slept at this hotel.

It was nice to actually do some real work and not just studying. Though I learned a lot, mostly work-related things since we didn't excactly have time to do some sightseeing for nessie or other typhical scottish stuff. We didn't even hear one single bagpipe-tune during our stay.

I also learned that I should always bring my bathingshorts with me if I'm staying at a hotel for a business-trip. You never know when the hotel you stay at have a spa-department...

I was on a pre-premiere(..?) on the movie Loop it is a documantary about taking choices that makes you break out of your daily circle of life and to take the moments in your life when you ask yourself "is this really the place I wish to be?" serious. The movie show some great norwegian nature and some spectacular scenes from klimbing and skiing.

I haven't had a "feelgood-feeling" like this after a movie since the movie about that choir from "berlevåg" that I don't remember the name for at this moment...

Lately I have started using the fantastic "link-bookmark-tag-folkonomy" service del.icio.us . It is a bookmarking service where you can add links as you come across websites you encounter and would like to remember. So what you might think... Well the really great idea is the Tag-system. where you add tags to each link for categorizing purposes.

If you would like to list all the links you have visited about guitars later, you just click the gitar-tag at the right side of the screen, and you get all links you have saved about guitars.

You can also see the links to other people that has saved the same links as you. It is a great way to find other sites that you might not have found yourself. Above is my del.icio.us site. feel free to play around in it but most importantly make your own...

This blog is for the trip I'm doing for the last six months this year. After several attempts on getting the phpBB-forum up and running. I have now given up. It seems like the combination of my patience and my lack of knowledge has resulted in a mutation on seiltur.tk. This time the mutation might have been for the better as I believe a blog is more reader-friendly than a forum... And I guess we need a blog more than a forum.

why:

- I woke up not feeling too tired.

- I ate a breakfast with more than one slice of bread.

- I read some interresting stuff at "work".

- The boss at "work" came inn to talk to me because he had heard that I apparantly am smart. (not my words, and I don't think I agree completely, but still a compliment that made me happy)

- My quarantine after finishing my master only lasts for 6 months. (making it kinda useless since I'll be on a sailboat for thoose six months.)

- I got really solid signs that I will get a joboffer at the place I am after I finish the diploma.

- I'll propably be able to work during the spring at the same place, give me some much needed dough in the bank.

- I played some billiards with some friends and won all my games.

- I am tired before 24 and feel really optimistic about getting to sleep before 2400.

A friend tipped me to write about stuff I've read lately, making hints that he had just read dostojevski. Well I could write that I've read to chapter 3 in the first Don Quiote-book or that I am currently reading book nine in the Wheel of Time series but I'd rather tell you that I read this really great comic.

It is a superman-story called 'red son' or 'rød super' in norwegian. What would happen if the pod with superman in it landed in russia instead of the US? great story, with some nice commenting on what's wrong with "the land god chose". (not israel and not an actual quote from the book I think...) It tells the whole story from birth to death or something like it.

It's candy for the communist that lives deep inside all.

ok, it is now two days since I made this blog and I am starting to get a feel for what I want it to be. who my targetgroup are and what type of content I wish to add to it.

hence comes my declaration of content and demography for my blog (as a list. as if you didn't already figure that by glancing down to the next lines):

- the blog is mainly for ppl that know me, but I won't exclude anyone who stumbles into my blog and wishes to read...

- I'll put pictures of me in it (since ppl I know might come to this blog to read how I am, what I think and so forth)
